And so to bed we go… with a Gro-hush!

Pre-pregnancy I was a total gadget and tech nut. Modern technology never fails to amaze and delight me (and occasionally scare me too!) It came as no surprise then that one of the things I became a little obsessed with is all of the spangly pregnancy and baby gadgets on offer. I know from my best friends experience that anything that will make life just that little bit easier or make me a little more efficient would be my new best friend.

Something she had told me was crucial for a newborn is a sound box that plays white noise. I know for her little boy it worked wonders and I’d had similar reviews from other mums. A tiny box that plays womb noises and would help my little one off to sleep? SOLD! So when I was given the chance to review the new Gro-hush, I jumped at it!

The Gro-hush is similar to the sound box you’d get in a toy like Ewan the dream sheep but with a big difference – it’s concealed in a slip on, plush and gorgeously soft hand mitt. This allows you to cover your little ones ear as you rock or cuddle them with the idea being that nobody else is disturbed by the noise, yet the baby is calmed by the soothing sounds. This video shows it in action.

It has three sounds to choose from; heart beat, ocean waves and falling rain. I must admit that my own personal favourite is the rain and in those early sleepless (and very stressful) nights I would often sit and listen to it myself which had a very calming effect on my slowly unraveling nerves!

Unfortunately though I can’t say the same for Oscar! While the Gro-hush may be soothing for some babies like in the video, it sadly did nothing to chill out my little man. If anything it may have riled him up more than it did settle him which I was truly gutted about as a tech lover! Of all of the sound settings it was the Ocean waves that he was most receptive to but even then he was fairly unimpressed and after a few minutes we would have no choice but to remove the Gro-hush from his ear and find another way to calm him.

I will say however that unlike most babies he is not soothed by any sounds or white noise. We were given Ewan the dream sheep by friends and he never took to that either – or the hoover/washing machine/engine as many said he might. I’m not sure why he doesn’t enjoy these sounds but I can only imagine that he hated being inside me so much that he doesn’t like to be reminded of his tiny hellish prison!

So alas for us, or should I say Oscar, the Gro-hush was a bit of a flop. Don’t let that deter you though – I have friends whose babies would have loved this! The sounds are really lovely and the product is incredibly well made and though out. It also feels lovely on my own ear even if Oscar isn’t keen so it would be lovely and comfortable for a baby who is comforted by white noise…just not this one sadly!

Disclosure: I was sent this Gro-hush by the lovely guys at Gro but this has had no impact or sway over my opinions.
