My Week – Swabs, Smears and Sitting

I read this week about one my fave blogger lovelies, Mummy Barrow, starting a new linky about all the things that we’ve done that week and it made me think about my life at the moment. Time is moving so quickly with Oscar – I can’t quite believe it but he’s six months old on Sunday; I have no idea where the time went. Every day marks a new milestone so I’m going to be joining in with T and documenting the little and big things that have happened each week so that I have a record of what’s been going on and to mark the changes in little mans life.

Monday

Monday was a bit of a washout weather wise – we had plenty of rain our way which scuppered my plans with the bestie to take a trip to the shops but it actually turned out to be for the best as we spent a lovely day sitting on her sofa, playing with the babies and drinking tea. It’s days like these that make me thankful that we get paid maternity leave in the UK and that my bestie and I have had babies only 6 weeks apart!

Oscar even did me proud and took a nap that WASN’T on my boob so I could drink a nice hot cup of tea! This is a rare occurrence and totally made my day! We even managed to get the first photo of him and his little girlfriend smiling together for the first time!

Tuesday

Eugh… Tuesday… This was not a fun day! In the past couple of months I’ve started to have a fair bit of abdominal pain which I can only relate back to my Cesarean in January so lucky old me got to go and have some swabs taken. I was fairly apprehensive as it’s the first time anyone’s been “down there” since I had Oscar and the nerves weren’t lessened when I was greeted with a sentence that every woman dreads as soon as I walked in – “We may as well do your smear while you’re here”… *shudders* Don’t worry – I didn’t take a photo for posterity 😉

Ah well – at least it’s done for another three years. I cheered myself up with lazy cuddles with Ozzy-pops on the sofa for the rest of the day!

Wednesday

Wednesday was an exciting day as my new bed was arriving! I’ve had my old one for about ten years and it had reached the stage where I felt that my bum was touching the floor but my head and feet were still riding high – total sag-city. They arrived super early at 7.30 so luckily the OH was here to help them! YAY BED!

It’s also the day my brother came over to spend some time with us. He brought pastries and coffees and we had breakfast with Ozzy in his high chair. It’s not often I get to enjoy a nice breakfast at the kitchen table so it was a nice little treat and it was lovely to spend some quality time with my little bro again. It doesn’t hurt that Oscar also adores him either as it gave me a nice respite from constantly holding/playing with him! Just look at those cute little faces!

Thursday

On Thursday me and the bestie finally got to head to the shops with all the kids in toe. We went under the guise of the bestie returning some items to Jo Jo Mama Bebe and my intention was to not spend money (because statutory maternity pay is a bitch) but obviously I didn’t stick to it and ended up with more stuff for Oscar. I managed to get a very cute reversible jacket and a gorgeous giraffe comforter for him from Marks and Sparks (how did I not know their kids stuff was awesome?!) and a new bath toy for him from Jo Jo. I also managed to pick up one of those rear view mirror things so I can see him when I’m driving, which is just as well because I later caught him with his arms fully out of his car seat straps, sitting up and staring backwards out of the front window!

In the afternoon I went on an impromptu trip to Eastbourne and Pevensy with my mum to go and buy Oscar some more hot weather appropriate clothing (Next is bloody amazing for baby clothes!) and then a gorgeous lunch on the beach with my grandparents at a restaurant called The Moorings. I’d never been before but it’s amazing and literally looks over the sea! The food was fantastic (as with any “quick lunch” with my grandparents, it turned into a three-course affair!) and it was lovely to spend some quality time with them. They adore Oscar too which means my arms got a rest from holding him up on his feet for hours!

Friday

After our busy Thursday, Friday was all about the cuddles. Lots of them, snuggled on the sofa. I watched the last few episodes of House (Which means I need to find a new boxset to get stuck in to if you have an suggestions?) and Oscar had fun playing in his jumperoo.

It was also the day that Oscar hit another big milestone and started sitting on his own! He started with just a few seconds at a time and now he can go for several minutes – before inevitably faceplanting the floor, usually because he wants to get his foot in his mouth (literally, not metaphorically). Here’s a couple of crap photo’s as evidence!

Saturday

We were a bit cheeky on Saturday and told the OH’s mum and dad that we had some “errands” to run in town and asked if they would look after Ozzy for an hour or two – they obviously jumped at the chance (they are besotted with him) but instead we went to a gorgeous little cafe for breakfast in town! (sshhhhh don’t tell them!). It’s the first time we’ve popped out for a lazy weekend brekkie since Oscar was born and it was wonderful! The cafe is lush too as it’s the kind of place that does proper loose tea with china cups and little tea leaf strainers! I didn’t get a picture of the food as I was too excited about getting a hot meal and wolfed it all down (scrambled eggs and bacon on toast for me, full veggie fry up for the boy!). We also had a mooch around the local charity bookshop (all books £1!!!) and picked up a couple of lovely ones for Oscar!

The rest of the day was spent playing, cuddling and practicing his new ability to sit on his own!

Sunday

Sunday broke our streak of Oscar sleeping through the night with a lovely 4.30 start (eugh, thanks mate!) so I fed him in bed and we all cuddled up and read Harry Potter for a bit before he nodded back off for a while – queue warm fuzzing feeling and me looking forward to cuddly Sunday morning’s in bed watching cartoons when he’s older!

We also gave him Mango to try for the first time – and slow mo’d the video for you of course! That face is pure genuis!

Later that day my lovely friend from uni came to see us from Saaaaaf End (she doesn’t talk like that at all!) and we spent the rest of the day playing, chatting, drinking tea and eating sausage sarnies (because Sausage Sunday is a thing in this house!). It was so lovely to see her and get a bit of a break to be Kelly and not just “Oscar’s Mum” for a few hours!

And that was my week – it actually felt really cathartic to write that all down for some reason!

See you next week!

p.s. someone please remind me to start taking a proper camera with me so my photo’s of Oscar aren’t so pants!

oh Kelly i LOVE this. Your boy is just adorable and I am kicking myself that six months old and I have not been down with a bottle of Chablis yet. I really must fix that.
