How Does Your Garden Grow Week 1 – Building a Vegetable Trough

Spring is in the air – or at least it was at the weekend. It’s decidedly greyer here today, which makes me all the happier that we started Operation Garden on Saturday. You see we bought this house last April but with all the painting, setting up bills and terror of finally leaving home, we just didn’t get round to doing anything outside!

Well that’s about to change and Operation Garden is our way of making the space somewhere that we want to spend time relaxing in the glorious British summer months (ahem). But more than that we want it to be a useful space. Somewhere we can grow things to support ourselves – and that means VEGGIES. So with the sun shining down on us we set about digging borders, planting dinky seeds and building a 6ft vegetable trough! Lots of piccies of the build  taken on my phone (better photos next week, I promise!) are below.

Our ultimate aim here, and the challenge we have set ourselves, is to see if what we get out of the trough in year 1 can cover what it cost us to make it:

Material Cost: £60.39
Compost Cost: £24

That means that we need to produce vegetables that would have cost us £84.39 to purchase in the supermarket. In short, I am a realist and I don’t think it’s going to be possible to get this kind of return in year one as it equates to approximately 42 bags of spinach . I love spinach as much as the next girl but this seems a little optimistic at the minute!

Either way, we’re going to give it a bloody good go!

I’ll keep you updated with a running total throughout the year as well as some of the other lovelies we have started growing (including 6 types of chilli!)

And here it is… in all its glory!

completed trough

From left to right we have sowed:

  • 2 x rows of lettuce
  • 2 x rows of radishes
  • 2 x rows of carrots
  • 2 x rows of onions,
  • 1 x row perpetual spinach

And here’s the build step-by-step!

Wish me luck!

Oh my that looks bloody great! Do you do mail order? 😉

Serious skillz and this is just the sort of thing I could do with making…
    1. was it super hard?
    2. do you provide a topless man as standard

no. 2 might sway my decision….

Thanks for joining in and sharing! x

ha I don’t think Mr Postie would be too happy lugging this thing around!

      1. OK so when I said “we” made it what I actually mean is my OH and his brother. So I personally think it was a piece of piss… they may disagree 😉 In all seriousness though I don’t think it’s too tricky as long as you put lots of support on for the legs, measure things properly and have another pair of hands when it comes time to put the legs on!

      2. Topless man can certainly be arranged and I have several you can choose from. Baby oil would need to be provided at your own expense

      Xxxx

Wow that looks great, you might not break even in the first year, but you’ll have that trough for a long time and by then the price of a bag of spinach will be through the roof!!

Exactly – this baby will pay for itself no problem! Plating radishes was another reason for making the most of it – damn those things are pricey in the supermarket!

Wow your vegetable trough looks great! I love having salad vegetables and herbs close to the back door to the kitchen, it is so satisfying to be able just pop outside and get what you need. I’ll look forward to seeing how you get on #HDYGG

      It is isn’t it Kirsty!

I’m most looking forward to the perpetual spinach – being able to grab a big handful and watch it spring back to life afterwards!

Oh wow that looks amazing, such a great design too. Love it. Will be so exciting to see everything appear. Our garden looks dreadful at the moment although the odd gem appears here and there. Needs some hardcore labour on it though!

      Thanks Charly!

Oh the rest of mine is terrible – I think the previous owner was a bit of a bodger and the ground is so uneven where he dug strange dips to set some awful decking into the lawn so lots of labour here too 🙂

I’ve just moved. Making new life in Devizes. Have a slipped disc and so gardening at this height is my only option, apart from sitting! Just looking at vegtrugs on line and saw yours. It’s wonderful. I will soon try to find someone who will make one for me as I don’t have a partner ( let alone a semi nude hunk!! ) well done you. Will love following your progress
